Cheesed off at the price of feta
Here’s a tip. My local Foodtown sells cow’s feta in the deli section for $14.50 a kilogramme. I’m always astounded at the price of feta in New Zealand’s supermarkets. We’ve done a bit of cheese making at home and feta is one of the easiest and quickest cheeses there is to make. Much quicker and cheaper to make than cheddar. Yet our supermarkets charge a premium for it. I’ve often thought about this because I buy feta for $9.99 at times from the Indian shop that lives in what to be Sandringham’s old cinema. That’s more like the price it should be everywhere. It’s not a premium cheese.
I won’t get onto the price of cheddar, but Chris Barton wrote an interesting article on the topic in 2008, which can be found here: http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=10510662
wow I love feta!! Have to seek out an receipe to make my own. JUst love the sharp taste with olives or sprinkled on soups or in quiches. Bring it on! I don’t buy it often as only one in the family who raves over it and …. yes, too darn expensive to buy.
Thanks Carol. My daughter’s class did a cheese tasting/making series of classes. It got me really interested. Making cheese is more science than cooking, but it’s fun to try. Sometimes the outcome isnt’ what I expect. But I’ve found if it all goes wrong, you can eat the product as if it was Ricotta (I bake it into lasagne dishes) so nothing is wasted.
I can’t remember which recipe I used. But there are some here for Feta:

Also, check out your local Foodtown. They might have the same deal. $14.50 per kg isn’t bad.
Check out http://cheeseforum.org/default.htm – its awesome.
Thanks Manny. The cheesemaking section of that forum is fabulous:

I actually quite like the taste of Pam’s brand feta. It was on sale yesterday at $3.99 for 200g. That’s $19.995 per kg. Not as good as the phenomenal Foodtown deal. But still not bad.
